Several weeks ago, after a discussion with my amazing wife, I realized we had reignited my desire to write. I have written for publication before, but my last article was published in 2015. Also, back then I was writing about recreational topics. I was just transitioning from University, where I had an intense course in Geology with dual minors in Economics and Geographic Information Systems (GIS), to a job in Alaska. The last thing I wanted to do at that time was write about weighty topics. I used that time to decompress my brain and write about travel, life on the road, raising and home-schooling children, and reviews about the places we went. I had also written for a sportsmen’s magazine. My longest and honestly most impactful article was about my return from Iraq, and how I used hunting, trapping, fishing and outdoor pursuits to help heal and decompress emotionally and mentally.
Coming back around to today, I have applied to multiple publications for contract and freelance positions. Over the years since University I have continued to study Economics, specifically Austrian School economics. I have also focused on Foreign affairs and specifically have been studying China and the impact its Belt and Road Initiative are having around the Indo-Pacific. So, although I am prepared for rejection, I am starting at the bottom and pursuing a new direction with my writing.
This does not mean I will stop my creative writing, I still have two novels I continually work on, as well as Flash Fiction, Short Stories, and freelance journalism in the Aviation sector. But, I look forward to seeing where this expanding horizon leads.
